Beauty is only skin deep … beauty is in the eye of the beholder … these are just a few axioms regarding your looks. But what happens when you look in the mirror and all you see are zits? For some people, acne can be quite traumatic, especially for teenagers. Whether you have a mild case of acne breakout or you suffer from a more serious form, it can make an impact both emotionally and psychologically. Your very outlook on life can be altered.

In extreme cases, some teenagers develop other conditions as a way to control their lives. If they cannot control their acne, they will control something else like eating or exercising. A healthy percentage of girls especially who suffer from acne develop anorexia and may even exercise until they drop. Even self-mutilation is practiced sometimes. It is that feeling that you have lost control of your life … all because of a zip!

Over all though, acne can undermine confidence and self-esteem. If you only see those zits in the mirror and not who you really are inside, you will believe that everyone is staring at your breakouts instead of paying attention to you. Many people may employ coping mechanisms to protect themselves in the event of teasing or ridicule. Other psychological and emotional side effects that acne may bring include:

1. Depression
2. Anger
3. Poor self-image
4. Preoccupation with your condition
5. Anti-social behaviors
6. Preoccupation and obsession with acne

It is important that acne sufferers receive some type of counseling, especially from their doctors. Support groups with people your own age can help as well. After all, who better to know what you are going through than others with acne too? With the counseling and support groups, hopefully you will receive the tools to build yourself back up and stay positive.

Unfortunately, acne is still viewed as a “dirty” disease. That means that you can either let that anger build inside because of other people’s misconceptions or you can arm yourself with medical reports and facts about your condition should someone bring it up. By taking charge of yourself and being responsible for not only your actions but also your acne care, you will likely feel better.

It seems that educating others about your pimple plight makes you feel a little better about yourself. No one else may realize that acne can be so debilitating both emotionally and physically. Many people who do not suffer from acne do not truly understand what it means to have it. By sharing your burden with others, you basically lighten your own emotional and psychological load. With some of the pressure gone, you can quit obsessing so much over your acne problem.

The single most important thing to do is to find the right treatment for your acne. Once you start a treatment regime, you will find that your confidence and self-esteem is rising. This is because you are empowering yourself and doing something about your acne. When you feel confident, that transfers to others as well.
