Great news! You don’t have to avoid chocolate just because you have acne. Contrary to what your grandmother and so-called “know it alls” say, there is no link between the consumption of chocolate and acne. Now weight gain on the other hand … that’s a whole different topic.

Acne is a skin condition that plagues not just hormonal teenagers but adults as well. Adult women are more likely to have acne than the men. You can blame menstrual hormones, pregnancy and even early stages of menopause. So as you can see, the myth that just teenagers get acne is not true. There are a number of other falsehoods regarding acne breakouts that should be debunked right now, so that the next time someone well-meaning gives you advice, you will be able to discern right from wrong.

1. Bad hygiene is the cause of acne.
False. Having acne does not mean that you do not wash. Rather, your oil glands overproduce the natural oils that keep your skin supple and lubricated. When this occurs, your oil ducts become blocked and get irritated thus causing acne.

2. You just have to grow out of acne.
False. Many people have acne past the age of 40! Acne does not discriminate between males or females and definitely note because of age.

3. Your pimples aka acne will clear up quicker if you pop them and squeeze out the pus.
Definitely false! While that pimple might look less noticeable immediately after popping, chances are that you have actually pushed the bacteria in the pimple deeper into your skin. This could become an even larger pimple later on or at the very least cause redness and swelling.

4. The more acne medication you apply, the quicker your acne will disappear.
False. The deal with most topical medications is that it contains an ingredient called benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These ingredients help to dry out your pimples and shrink them until they disappear. If you use too much, your skin dries out, thus irritating it which leads to even more acne breakouts.

5. Diet is a contributing factor to the cause of acne.
False. While some people firmly believe that certain foods in their diet exacerbate their acne breakouts, there is no true scientific evidence to the fact. So enjoy your French fries and pizza with a clear conscience.

6. Makeup can cause acne.
True and False. There are many nonacnegenic make up lines these days that contain ingredients that fight acne. However, there are just as many brands of makeup that can irritate skin and cause acne. The bottom line is that your skin is a very delicate organ. You have to take your cues from it. If a certain makeup seems to create acne or make your existing acne worse, discontinue its use.

The fact of the matter is that there are a number of contributing factors that can cause acne. Hormones are one of these factors, specifically testosterone in men and something called androgen which is a steroid hormone in women. Genetics too will play a part to a certain extent. So you can blame your parents and your ancestors for your acne breakouts. Just know that you are not alone in your acne problem and that there are a number of treatments out there for acne. Unfortunately it is a trial and error process to find the one that works for you.
